Genesis 1:3-4

“And God said, “let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” (NIV)

God spoke light into existence. He literally spoke it. Just as God spoke and there was light, He wants to speak into your life. God not only spoke light into motion, He also saw that it was good. Not only that but He saw that darkness was not. So He separated them. He separated the light from the darkness. God wants to separate what was there before He spoke in your life.

Before Christ, we are full of darkness. Then God speaks and light begins to exist in our lives. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “That means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (NLT) So often we forget to separate the darkness from the light once we come into relationship with Christ. This doesn’t just refer to sin. This means separating what others, and even yourself, have said about yourself from what God has said about you. This means separating what misconceptions we have believed about God from who He really is. This means keeping what was before separate from what is.

That has been the hardest thing for me personally in my own walk with the Lord. I struggle with separating my darkness with the light. I still have to force myself not to believe the things I’ve thought about myself. I still have to try really hard to avoid being tempted by the things I did before. I still struggle with others seeing me as who I was before. It isn’t easy. But luckily I have a loving, patient, and grace-giving Savior to walk hand-in-hand with me. I am a living testimony of 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecution, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (NIV)

This verse is one of my favorites. I think it’s really powerful. One of the main reasons I have such a hard time separating the darkness and light in my life is because I have believed that it meant I had to be perfect. Spoil alert: I don’t and neither do you. God’s power is made perfect in weakness. We are always going to fail but God’s grace is sufficient for all. God separated the light and the darkness. Man didn’t. I think that is something we need to realize. We can’t separate it on our own, we need God.

We get into trouble when we try to put together what God has taken apart. That is where we mess up. God brings things apart for a reason. He is separating you from the tight place you have been in to bring you into where He needs you to be. He is taking you out of this season into another for a reason, for your calling. Stop trying to bring together what God has separated. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (NIV) So many times, we let the fear of change keep us from trusting the Lord. God knows exactly what you need and when you need it. He isn’t taking things away to harm you but to grow you. We need to surrender our control of our circumstances to the Lord and let Him be in control. Once again, we get into trouble when we try to put together what God has taken apart.

God wants to separate what was there before He spoke in your life.
